Trunyan Village

Nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Batur beneath the towering Mount Batur volcano, Trunyan Village offers a truly unique cultural experience. The village is home to the Bali Aga, the island’s indigenous people, who maintain ancient traditions that stand in stark contrast to modern Balinese customs.

One of the village’s most fascinating rituals is its distinctive burial practice. Instead of cremation, the Bali Aga lay the bodies of the deceased around a sacred tree known as the “Taru Menyan” or “fragrant tree.” Remarkably, despite the exposed placement of the corpses, there is no unpleasant odor, thanks to the tree’s unique ability to absorb the scent of decomposition through its natural fragrance.
